Dominoes are a type of game that is played with a set of pieces. These pieces are usually divided into two squares, with each tile having a number of pips on one end. The pips are used for matching purposes. In most games, the players score by awarding pips to the opposing player’s tiles. If all the tiles in the set have the same number of pips on one end, they are considered to belong to the same suit. For instance, a 0-6 tile belongs to the suit of zero, and a 5-5 tile belongs to the suit of five.

Before the game begins, the players must decide on a target score. This target is the number of points the winning team will gain. In some versions of the game, the winner is the first player to put all of the pieces down. When this happens, the game is over. But in other versions, a winner is the player who scores the most points.
Playing dominoes is surprisingly strategic. First, the players place their tiles in a pattern. The tiles are usually laid face down, but they can be placed in any direction. During play, the tiles are moved, in turn, to form a line or tower. Depending on the set, the tower may be built to be a straight or angled shape.

When playing dominoes, the players must position the tile so that it touches one of the ends of the chain. If a tile does not have 12 pips on one end, it is flipped over and repositioned. The game can be played with two to four players. The set of dominoes is usually a double-six or a double-12, and the rules can be altered for larger or smaller sets. One of the simplest games is the block-and-draw variant. Players draw a lead piece and then shuffle the remaining tiles.
After the first player shuffles the remaining tiles, the other three players must take turns picking one tile each from the lead piece. Those tiles that remain unused are called the boneyard. There are also some variations that call for the players to add tiles to the line of play in any order.
Once a domino is placed on the table, the next player has to choose a tile that matches the first one. This can be done by matching the face of the domino to a part of the first tile.
